Research at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte is grouped thematically in three areas:
- Object and Materiality
- Art History as Knowledge and Academic Discipline
- Art in historical-political space and in a global context
The position and function of a research institution with both national and international orientation particularly require identification of overarching groups of related topics and organizing cooperative work on these projects. Here individual research projects on concrete historical issues are tied into this larger working context. Institutionally and in terms of content, the ZI is predestined for innovative methodological and thematic perspectives that focus and connect national and international research, as well as transmit new stimuli to these.
The ZI is decidedly under no obligation to embed its work in a national framework or limit it to a national scope. This open research horizon is ideally suited for comprehensive contemporary research issues in the age of post- and transnational networks.
